During the surveys that began in 2004, the urban limits of Komana spreading across a 2km long area were determined, and smaller settlements dating from Early Bronze Age through the Ottoman Period in its territory were discovered. Excavations have started in 2009 with a permit from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the work concentrated on Hamamtepe. During the excavations, workshops as well as a fortification wall of 3,5m wide at the uppermost levels of Hamamtepe which date to the Late Byzantine/Seljuk Periods were discovered. The excavations will expand to other parts of the settlement in coming years and levels representing periods as early as the reign of the Mithradatic Kingdom of the Hellenistic Period are expected.
